The Hidden Fraud Risks in Healthcare Billing and Payments

The Hidden Fraud Risks in Healthcare Billing and Payments

Fraud has long been part of the medical landscape and often makes news headlines. According to Elliot Darling, Product Manager at EHR vendor MEDITECH, providers are especially concerned about fraud in Medicare and Medicaid billing. In this video, Darling discusses some current methods of detecting fraud along with Tyler Stoltz, Fraud Manager at the payment processing company ECHO.

Stoltz says that the weak points where most fraud occurs are connections, such as when one person is processing a bill and has to ask another person for approval. Malicious intruders take advantage of these connection points by using LinkedIn, social media, and other online information to find the executives and key employees in health care companies.

Darling agrees that many people are busy and in a hurry to expedite a payment, and therefore don’t validate the vendor requesting payment or other actors in the system. The use of credit cards has made billing systems more complicated and therefore harder to use safely.

Stoltz says that paper checks are the most targeted form of payment by fraud, not only in health care but in society generally. Moving to electronic payments is critical.

Stoltz and Darling also discuss the value of partnering with a payment processor such as ECHO. Their expertise takes on some of the burden of dealing with this complex task. Validation of parties can be automated. Plus, the ECHO payment solution is embedded directly in the MEDITECH EHR.  This integration helps to streamline the process for hospitals and creates a smaller attack surface for fraudsters.
