Navigating Towards the Autonomous Enterprise in Healthcare
SAP’s latest Business AI innovations from Joule Work and Joule Studio to the Business Data Cloud and what they mean for healthcare organizations transforming at scale.
Healthcare is at an inflection point. Clinical and operational teams face mounting pressure to do more with less yet most AI deployments remain stuck in pilot mode, unable to scale.
Recently, we had the privilege of hosting an immersive onsite workshop for our Healthcare partners, where we unveiled SAP’s transformative vision for the Autonomous Enterprise and demonstrated how partners can accelerate their AI journey using cutting-edge SAP technologies with an early sneak peak of SAP Joule work including Joule Studio along with some exciting hands-on sessions by building own agents with SAP Joule Studio.
CONTEXT
Why Most AI Efforts Stall Before They Scale
Across industries including healthcare the story is frustratingly familiar: proofs of concept that never reach production, AI tools layered on top of disconnected systems, and results that cannot be traced or audited. SAP’s research surfaces three structural gaps that keep AI locked in pilot mode:
- Lack of Business & Process Context – Generic models can read your data. They cannot reason over how a healthcare organization actually runs from patient admission to reimbursement.
- Disconnected Data & Integration – AI is added on top of fragmented, outdated systems. Without a unified data foundation, every insight is incomplete, and every recommendation is unreliable.
- Lack of Governance & Reliability – AI that cannot be audited or controlled is a liability especially in regulated environments such as healthcare. 74% of organizations remain stuck in pilot mode.
“Most AI providers are building from the outside in layering intelligence on top of systems they don’t own, data they didn’t generate, processes they’ve never run.”
SAP’s response is to build from the inside out. With 50 years of embedded process and industry intelligence, a semantically rich business data model spanning 7.3 million data fields, and enterprise-grade governance covering 100% of AI workloads through ISO 42001, SAP already has the foundation that other providers cannot replicate quickly.
VISION
The Autonomous Enterprise: People Direct, Assistants coordinates and Agents Executes
SAP’s architectural north star is the Autonomous Enterprise, a model where people set strategic direction, and AI agents handle routine transactions end to end. In healthcare, this means administrators focus on decisions that matter while intelligent agents manage the operational burden of scheduling, billing, supply chain coordination, and compliance monitoring.

PRODUCT HIGHLIGHTS
Joule Work — Beyond Chat
One place to direct the business. Less navigation. Faster action. Better decisions.
In healthcare, transitioning to AI is not easy. Hence, SAP joule work as a part of the Business AI platform is making the transformation smooth. Joule Work represents a fundamental shift in how enterprise users interact with SAP systems. Rather than switching between applications to find context, complete tasks, or surface insights, users stay in a single workspace. AI assistants bring the context. Agents move the work. People make the decisions that matter.
“AI does the busy work, so you do your best work.”
For healthcare organizations, this translates directly into reduced administrative burden. A clinical operations manager can query patient scheduling data, trigger a supply order, and review compliance alerts, all in one conversation, accessible on any device without having to navigate between multiple systems.
Key Capabilities of Joule Work
- Conversations – The natural-language interface where healthcare users direct the work. Conversations bring role-based intents, multi-turn threads, typeahead, and auto-suggestions into a single surface that reaches across the SAP Business Suite, so a clinical operations manager can ask about scheduling in SuccessFactors, open supply orders in S/4HANA Cloud, and cross-system status in one thread without switching applications. Responses adapt to what the user actually needs: tables and charts when the answer is data, structured cards when the next step is an action, plain summaries when the user is orienting. On mobile, Conversations run with voice mode on iOS and Android, which matters for clinicians moving between wards rather than sitting at a workstation.
Conversations is the most mature part of Joule Work today and is what the first EAC cohort, joining from July onward on SAP-managed Joule and S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition, will experience first. Over the EAC window, Conversations will progressively unlock deeper cross-system reasoning and richer response formats as more capabilities and agents come online, giving healthcare organizations a way to introduce AI to their teams on familiar ground before layering in more autonomous behavior. - Spaces – Spaces help users assemble dynamic workspaces. Rather than navigating to a Fiori app, hunting for the right tile, and stitching context together manually, the user expresses intent and Joule generates a Space: a set of adaptive cards drawn live from the underlying systems, arranged into sections, refreshable, and persisted so the user can come back to the same context later.
A discharge coordinator asking for “a workspace for ward 4B this afternoon” gets bed availability, pending orders, pharmacy statuses, and transport bookings composed into one view. A procurement lead asking about a supplier gets open POs, delivery estimates, and returns in one place. The Space is generated for that person and that intent, not pre-designed by IT. Spaces is the newest surface in Joule Work, and the EAC window is where healthcare organizations get to experience it first. Cards are generated on demand, refined in place through further prompting, and refreshed against live data through SAP Knowledge Graphs, giving users a single governed surface to reason over information that today lives across separate applications. As the EAC progresses, Spaces will grow richer, with more collaborative and interactive patterns on the roadmap, opening up healthcare-specific extension opportunities for partners both in the shape of the Spaces users receive and in the agents that populate them.
- Joule Studio – Joule Studio helps teams build governed AI agents faster, using business context, reusable agents, and Low-code development. A unified, AI-first development environment for creating agents, apps, and workflows. Building custom AI solutions that actually work in production requires more than a capable language model. It requires deep business context, governed runtimes, and tools that reduce the gap between business intent and working code. Joule Studio delivers exactly that a development environment where healthcare partners and customers can build or extend, SAP-grounded agentic solutions.
Intent-Based Development: From Idea to Production
The defining innovation in Joule Studio is intent-based development (IBD) with the ability to describe a desired business outcome in plain language and have AI generate a complete, enterprise-ready solution. The process flows through five stages:
- Business Intent Analysis Describe the business problem in natural language. Joule Studio enriches it with SAP Signavio process context, SAP LeanIX landscape data. SAP Domain Models & SAP Knowledge Graph
- Product Requirements Document (PRD) AI generates a structured PRD anchored in real-world business context, SAP domain models, and the Knowledge Graph.
- The PRD is translated into a technical specification that defines scope, architecture, integrations, and security so implementation is guided not guessed.
- Code Generation & Testing – SAP-aware code is generated from the spec. Automated validation and agent evaluations run behavioral checks before promotion to production.
- Deployment & Governance Solutions deploy to an SAP-managed runtime. The SAP AI Agent Hub provides centralized lifecycle management, observability, and security controls.
The SAP Advantage in Joule Studio
- Unmatched Business Context – Grounded in your technology landscape, applications, processes & best practices.
- One Solution, Any Tool – Build agents, apps, or workflows using any tool or framework from low-code to full IDE pro-code in a single environment.
- Design-time tooling is free included in BTPEA, CPEA or PAYG entitlements. Runtime promotion available through December 2026 at no additional charge.
Did we spark your interest in Joule Studio? If yes, check out the demo.
In addition to web version, Joule Work will be available to Partner and Customers in two further version.
Joule Work Desktop – Joule Work Desktop brings conversational AI directly to knowledge workers working with your local files, connecting to SAP and non-SAP systems via MCP tools, and automating repetitive tasks through custom Skills, all within a secure environment.
Joule Work Mobile – Available on iOS and Android with voice mode. Consistent experience across all SAP applications through standalone and embedded Joule modes.
Healthcare-Relevant Agents
Recent AI Agents and AI features capabilities shipped for by SAP could also be adapted and extended by Healthcare Industry as per the need. Joule Studio enables partners to build and extend agents covering the full care and operations continuum. Examples from existing AI Agents and Features relevant to healthcare:
- Supplier Delivery Date Prediction
- Catalog item recommendations
- AI-Assisted Forecasting,
- Automatic Outlier Correction,
- Conversational Planning, and so on
Supplier Delivery Date Prediction, an AI-powered capability available in SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition.
The goal of this functionality is straightforward: instead of relying solely on the delivery date promised by a supplier, SAP uses historical purchasing data and machine learning to predict when a purchase order is actually likely to arrive. This gives procurement teams a more realistic view of expected deliveries and allows them to act before delays become a problem.
For hospitals, this can provide significant operational value. Hospitals depend on the timely delivery of thousands of products every day from pharmaceuticals and medical consumables to implants, laboratory supplies, and spare parts for critical medical equipment.
If the system predicts that a delivery is likely to be late, procurement teams can proactively contact the supplier, source an alternative product, or adjust inventory plans before patient care is affected. This shifts the organization from reacting to supply issues after they occur to managing them proactively.
From a business perspective, the benefits include improved delivery accuracy, better planning, and more informed purchasing decisions. It can also help reduce emergency purchases, minimize stock shortages, and improve supplier performance over time.
Overall, this capability helps hospital procurement teams make smarter, data-driven decisions, improve supply chain resilience, and ultimately support better patient care through more reliable material availability.
By providing early visibility into supplier risks, hospitals can reduce disruptions, improve inventory planning, and ensure that critical medical supplies are available when clinicians need them most.”

SAP Business Data Cloud — The Data Foundation for AI
Centralizing business data for seamless integration, analytics, and AI-supported processes in healthcare
Healthcare organizations have invested heavily in data infrastructure warehouses, lakes, analytics platforms yet most were optimized for dashboards in a deterministic world. The AI era demands a Knowledge Core: constantly connected, context-rich data that intelligent agents can reason over. SAP Business Data Cloud (BDC) is that foundation bringing together SAP and non-SAP data under a unified semantic layer, grounding it in the SAP Knowledge Graph, and making it available to Joule agents and intelligent applications.
Healthcare Data Strategy in BDC – Looking ahead, SAP plans to make health-related data from both SAP and non-SAP source systems available within Business Data Cloud. This creates a single, governed data environment where healthcare-specific analytics, AI agents, and operational reporting all draw from the same authoritative source: patient-to-reimbursement analytics, bed utilization dashboards, and workforce planning all connected, semantically enriched, and AI-ready.
