Sunoh.ai Helps Ampla Health Improve Coding, Billing, and Physician Satisfaction
Ambient note-taking scribes have achieved such successes—according to Mustafa Ammar, MD, Chief Medical Officer at Ampla Health—that the first question from doctors interviewing for jobs at his federally qualified health center is whether they offer a scribe. Luckily, they do: Sunoh.ai.
To get his doctors interested in Sunoh.ai, Ammar invested his personal time. He used it for two months, saw that it was very accurate (“worked perfectly,” in fact), and then showed his notes to doctors. Now most of them are using it. The practice had tried some general-purpose voice recording tools before, but using one designed specifically for clinical use was an important milestone.
Burnout is often on the top of doctors’ and their managers’ minds. And Sunoh.ai definitely delivered results here. Doctors report that they are going home on time and avoiding the need to spend their personat time writing notes, even though they are seeing more patients than before. The notes are also closed within 48 hours, which is important for billing.
But most important to Ammar is the quality of the documentation. When doctors were under time pressure, they were tempted to “cut corners” and leave out important details. They would also typically write down only one diagnostic code, when the patient might be reporting six or seven billable conditions. Now the notes are complete and detailed, and contain all relevant codes. Ammar also mentioned that the ambient system is not expensive.
Ammar noted another advantage of ambient recording: in case a patient complains about the doctor’s work, the entire exchange in the visit is recorded and can be used to protect the doctor.
Patients are also happy. No one has rejected use of the tool. Patients used to complain that their doctor was typing instead of listening, but now they get the doctor’s attention, The system can even order a test on the doctor’s behalf.
Ammar is happy at many of the upcoming features promised by Sunoh.ai, particularly report summaries. All in all he says, “it’s a dream come true.”
