How Physicians Are Using AI to Improve Care and Coding with Navina

While at the recent Navina Ascend user conference, Healthcare IT Today had the opportunity to sit down with three of Navina’s customers to learn more about their experience using Navina at their organizations.  Needless to say, the doctors were all candid with their experience with the technology and the impact it was having on their organization.

One of those physicians was Jarrett Dodd, MD, Chief Medical Officer at CVFP, who shared that physicians are naturally competitive. Show them a dashboard comparing how well they’re doing on their job, and they strive to improve their performance. This is one of the advantages of Navina, an AI-driven tool that supports clinical decision-making, documentation, and value-based care workflows. Doctors can quickly identify and act on care gaps.

On the clinical side, Navina can extract key facts about a patient from their records, allowing doctors to determine quickly what to talk about before an appointment. One doctor eliminated two to three hours of work from her day by using Navina to summarize information on the patients instead of coming in early to the office each day. Navina also surfaces issues found when patients saw another provider, which their regular doctor might not have noticed because the details were buried in the record.

Bhavana Vora, MD, Board Chair at Summit Medical Group said that her organization found it hard to combine records after acquisitions. Navina accelerated data migration, so that data did not lag behind the patients. The tool is integrated with the EHR, eliminating the need to visit multiple portals, and is just as useful for the nurses as for the doctors.

Keith Fernandez, MD, Chief Clinical Officer at Privia Health, says that auditors at his organization verified that coding had improved, in terms of reimbursement rates, after they deployed Navina. This help is particularly useful in value-based settings, and helped his organization rebase with Medicare. Dodd said Medicare Advantage imposed strict documentation requirements that most doctors couldn’t meet before Navina.

All three doctors in the interview explained how their organizations chose Navina, out of a crowded field. Dodd said that he looked at the tool after it was cited by the American Academy of Family Practice. But “Navina sold itself,” he said, when he demoed it for other staff.

Vora said that a pilot project “brought some validity” at her organization. She advises organizations to sell AI by installing ambient scribes. When doctors discover how much AI can do for them in scribing, they’ll look favorably at other AI solutions. “We can’t do it all alone,” she says.

Fernandez says that Navina goes beyond billing and has “gigantic potential for better patient outcomes.” The doctor can focus on the patient during the appointment. But it can help the whole practice do more to enhance care.

When asked what could improve in the future, Dodd says he’d like to see AI applied to the doctor’s inbox, which he calls “the biggest burnout point.”

Vora says she still has to install AI tools on many different platforms, and would like to have it all in one place.
