Elation Health’s AI Assistant Can Have a Big Impact on Primary Care

Elation Health provides an EHR along with a tightly integrated ambient voice tool, Note Assist, that generates notes on visits. But to Kyna Fong, PhD, CEO and Co-Founder, the ambient voice solution’s main value and differentiator is to look beyond the note to ask “What other actions need to happen?” It can suggest referrals and prescriptions to “set the care plan on the right path and enable that care plan to be followed.”

Although Elation Health supports many medical disciplines, Fong says that it’s particularly valuable in primary care because it can make a big impact on physicians’ administrative needs.

Note Assist works closely with templates in the EHR. It can perform sophisticated tasks such as finding the best source for a prescription to minimize the patient’s copay.

Unlike many ambient voice solutions, Note Assist doesn’t wait till the interview finishes to generate the note, but does so as the interview goes along. The patient might review the note along with the doctor, allowing the patient to understand the doctor’s reasoning and ask more questions.

The company uses internal metrics to measure accuracy, quality, and the burden on the physician. The most important metric, according to Fong, is what percentage of the note required changes by the physician.

In addition to accuracy, physicians want a note that reflects their own style, such as the level of detail included and whether to use bullets to organize points. Fong wants the note to be customized to the physician’s preference, but believes that ambient voice transcription will help to standardize notes.
