The Value of Health Data Utilities with Angie Bass from Velatura
The pressures for data exchange and interoperability have converged on the concept of a health data utility. At the DirectTrust conference, Angie Bass, Chief Strategy Officer at Velatura, describes this as a “unifying force” that is “supported like a public utility” to exchange data among health care facilities.
However, the business opportunities no longer lie simply in exchanging data, which is a rock-bottom requirement. Instead, vendors and clients alike have to find value in data: how to benefit providers, patients, etc. Bass talks of data as part of business intelligence, and of data remediation and recovery.
Given the imperative to use data productively, she calls consent management and data quality the “underbelly” of data exchange. Trust is “imperative” and depends on both of those things. In turn, data exchange is critical for value-based reimbursement and for recent developments such as AI in health care.
Recent laws have push health data exchange forward. Federal legislation has passed to require interoperability and to provide the states with funding to institute health data utilities. Velatura is working with government agencies to make these rules come to life.
