Gozio Health Creates a Platform for a Flexible, Comprehensive Mobile Interface

By working closely with it’s health system clients, who represent 200+ hospitals, Gozio Health has recognized the need for a mobile platform that gives patients as well as organizations the functionality and experience they want. Wisely, Gozio has chosen to create an open framework that will allow organizations to use components from different vendors, rather than a walled-garden approach. Company executives believe this will help speed adoption which in turn will mean a more streamlined patient experience.

Healthcare IT Today had the opportunity to sit down with Gozio Health executives to find out more about their mobile platform. We spoke with CEO and Founder Joshua Titus and Chief Product Officer Lee Jones.

No more single-purpose apps

According to Statista, in 2022 there were over 5.6 million apps available on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store. Of those, an estimated 25% of those downloaded are used only once and many are built for a single purpose.

What Gozio has realized through listening to customers and patients, is that single-use apps in healthcare do not create a desirable user experience. It makes no sense for patients to log into on app to find a matching physician, then go a different app (or portal) to make an appointment, then another to check in for their appointment, another to find their way to their appointment, and yet another to receive post-appointment educational materials.

Gozio, which has been a recognized leader in the wayfinding space, has been hard at work developing their mobile framework to address this unmet need in the market. Everything runs within the Gozio Health cloud and is exposed through a single app with a consistent user interface. The range of operations available to patients makes the app attractive, giving patients many reasons to download it.

In addition, the company adopted an open approach for its framework.

“If you want your virtual visits to be Amwell, no problem, that can be plugged in,” explained Titus. “If you want your physician network to be Yext or Kyruus, those can be added. It’s an open framework that you can plug in pieces to.”

By using this approach, Gozio is aiming to provide customers with 80-90% of the functionality they want using off-the-shelf and out-of-the-box components that do not require custom development.

Streamlining patient experience = more revenue

Focusing on delivering a streamlined mobile patient experience might sound like a nice-to-have right now, especially as healthcare organizations struggle with staffing issues, revenue challenges, and supply shortages. Titus, however, sees mobile as integral to engaging with patients and bringing more of them to a healthcare system.

He compared it to the airline industry: “We book our tickets online using a computer, but when the day of the flight arrives, we do everything on our mobile phone. Everything from checking in and filling out the necessary forms to getting directions to where I am going is done on my phone. Would you book with an airline that forced you jump through hoops to book, pay for and get onto your flight? Would you spend money on an airline that didn’t offer a mobile experience?”

Lee stressed that a mobile experience means more than just rendering a website into a smaller format that will fit a mobile device. To be truly mobile-native means designing the application to take advantage of the device’s unique capabilities like knowing your location and ability to instantly connect with a loved one stored in a contact list.

“Mobile is how we interact with most organizations nowadays,” Titus stated. “We want to bring that same experience and convenience to healthcare.”

Listen to Joshua Titus and Lee Jones talk about the value of providing a single entry point and interface on mobile devices, and how they designed their platform to provide that interface to hospitals.
